Ireland’s target of 146 proved to be too much for the team as India beat the northern team by 52 runs, and moving on to the semi-final of the ICC Women’s T20 for the third time.
The Irish were going to have a difficult time besting the Indian team, and despite some strong efforts, India remained ahead for the entirety of the match. Keeping tab of the run rate and working on the wickets meant that Ireland was stuck behind the eight-ball.
The fate of the Irish team was already apparent by the third over when Gabby Lewis failed to take a run from Mansi Joshi’s over. Deepti Sharma gave India the lead after she removed Lewis for a slow 9 off her first delivery. Claire Shillington attempt to keep increase their runs but the Indian bowlers were keeping them in check. Radha Yadav was the top bowler for the Indian side, taking three wickets in four overs. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur bowled four overs in ten runs, forcing the Irish to remain in constant defence.
Opener Mithali Raj was the first pick of the batters for the Women in Blue, and took her 17th T20 half-century, which also earned her the player of the match award.
India’s victory means that Pakistan and New Zealand are now sitting on two and zero points respectively. India is set to take on Australia next, with the winner taking the top spot for Group B of the tournament.
