Kaylum Boshier Born To Lead By Example
Kaylum Boshier isn’t your average Joe. He isn’t even your average cricket-playing Joe. He is a New-Plymouth Old Boys all-rounder and the skipper appointed to take the national New Zealand U19 cricket team into the 2018 U19 Cricket World Cup.
Whilst being interviewed at the national training camp at Mt Maunganui earlier during the week, Boshier said that he had enjoyed captaining teams since he was a young boy. He said that he didn’t believe that there was a set winning formula when it came to captaining a team, but that he believed it was enough to do his part and assist where necessary.
He went on to say that he enjoyed leading by example and that the hope was that the national team would get behind him ahead of the U19 Cricket World Cup.
Captain By Nature
Boshier is by no means new to the captain deal. He had previously captained the Central District Under 17 as well as the Central District Under 19 teams at national tournaments and will now enjoy the ultimate honour of leading a national world cup team (hopefully) to victory.
The game against the West Indies (Windies) promises to be a tricky one as it will be played under lights. Boshier said that this was perhaps the biggest challenge lying ahead of him as he had never played, let alone led a national team, under lights before.
As a player, Boshier is hard to beat. He recently made his debut century whilst playing for Taranaki against Marlborough in a Chappie Clash and sweetened the deal a month later in November by making playing a debut century at club level for New-Plymouth Old Boys.
World Cup Format
The U19 Cricket World Cup commences on January 13th and will involve a total of 14 national teams playing 48 limited overs matches spread out around four areas of New Zealand: Christchurch, Queenstown, Tauranga and Whangarei.
The boys from New Zealand’s national U19 side played two warm-up matches against the Zimbabwean national side in the run up towards Christmas.
New Zealand will be competing in Group A in the tournament alongside South Africa, the West Indies and surprisingly enough, Kenya. It is the clash against the West Indies that will be played under lights.
There’s not a doubt in our minds that Boshier will continue to stand out head and shoulders above the rest, even under the lights.
