Marsh Brothers Make For Personal Victory in Ashes Test

Shaun and Mitch Marsh not only had a decided hand in Australia winning the fourth Ashes test against England on the weekend, they also made for a personal best by becoming the first brothers since Mark and Stephen Waugh to combine for a century.  The Waugh brothers managed this particular feat in 2001 during the fifth Ashes test at The Oval.

Commenting on the century after the match, Shaun Marsh said that it had been an extremely happy moment for Mitch and himself to have been able to share each other’s emotions when they made their big hundred together.

Mitch Marsh was eventually bowled out for 101 by Tom Curran, and Shaun was stopped short by a run out at 156.

England Putting Up A Fight

Meanwhile, England’s assistant coach Paul Farbrace has said that it has been a particularly tough tour for England so far, and that it many ways the fourth Test was very much a reflection of what had been happening in the series up until now.  He said that England had been putting up a valiant fight but that they were up against a team who were playing very good cricket.

For England, in many ways it was a losing battle from the onset.  Their second innings started on a difficult note as they lost Mark Stoneman (lbw) to Stark almost immediately.  Stoneman called for a review but it was revealed that the ball had indeed hit leg stump and as such, the decision was upheld.

It was very nearly a case of a double blow but it was staved off by Shaun Marsh in order to spare the opener.  Shaun had just become the sixth player to have completed a total of 12,000 test runs.

In test cricket history only Jacques Kallis (13,289), Rahul Dravid (13,288), Kumar Sangakarra (12,400), Ricky Ponting (13,378) and Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) have tallied up more test runs than Shaun Marsh.

Joe Root Suffers In Aussie Temperatures

If England are having a bad time of it, then captain Joe Root is probably the embodiment of the terrible stint.  Root did not return to play after lunch time on Sunday after having been forced to retire for a second time during the series as a result of dehydration.

Temperatures measured at nearby weather stations pushed 43.7 degrees, certainly not the kind of extreme heat the stark-white English would have been accustomed to.
