National Selectors Surprise Yet Again

A Surprising Choice for ODI Squad

Australia has been known to spring a couple of surprises on players and fans and it seems that the upcoming One Day International will be no exception.  It was recently announced that Cameron White will be replacing Chris Lynne in the squad of fourteen.  Lynne is currently out of play due to having sustained an injury to his right calf.

The surprise at White’s selection isn’t due to his failing to perform in any way, but rather the relevance of recent play.  White has racked up a smashingly impressive record in this year’s Big Bash League, being the second highest run-scorer.  The decision to include him in Lynne’s place is unconventional and unexpected due to his (White) having last played in a One Day International back in January 2015.  Eons ago, by any professional sporting standard.

White’s inclusion in the squad means that teammate Glenn Maxwell will not be competing for team and country when Australia faces the English.  Selectors have been outspoken about the fact that more consistency in play was required from Maxwell and captain Steve Smith has stressed the fact that it was vital for Maxwell to train smarter.

White “No Idea” Why He Was Selected Instead Of Maxwell

When asked why he thought that Maxwell had not been selected to play in the upcoming ODI, White responded that he had no idea and that this was a question that had to be posed to the selectors, captain and coach, and not to him (White).

White seemed sincerely surprised at his own inclusion in the team.  He referred to players who were much younger than him, such as Ashton Turner and D’Arcy Short, saying that he had full well expected one of the younger players to have been selected and called to duty instead.

He did ad that this did not mean that he wasn’t very happy at having been afforded the opportunity.  White is confident that he has what it takes, despite being older than his counterparts.  He also said that it had been a dream of his to one day play for Australia again, but that he had considered this to be something that would happen in the far-away future.  He was pleasantly surprised that opportunity had come knocking so soon.

According to national selector Trevor Hohns, White is by all means the man for the job: experienced, smart and a leading run-scorer.
