Governed By The Old ICC Rules
The ICC has determined that Australia’s upcoming series against India will be played according to the existing ICC rules and not the new rules set to be implemented as from September 28th. The new rules will in fact take effect when South Africa take on Bangladesh and Sri Lanka go up against Pakistan. The new rules will also apply when New Zealand take on India half-way through October.
The ICC has said that the reason for the decision that the Australia/India Series be played by the old rules, is to eradicate any possible confusion. The series will comprise of three T20 Internationals and five ODI’s.
The New Rules
The new set of rules includes amendments to the general code of conduct, the size of the equipment as well as DRS usage. One of the most prominent changes to the rules is that a team will no longer lose a review under DRS if a leg-before referral is returned as being that of an umpire’s call. Furthermore, the current rule, allowing for a top-up of reviews after 80 test overs, is set to be removed completely.
General offences will continue to be managed and dealt with according to the ICC’s Code of Conduct – with the added amendment that umpires will now have the authority to send players off the field for misconduct. This includes violent behaviour towards other players or parties on the field.
Additional restrictions have been imposed on equipment, specifically bat dimensions – i.e. the depth of the bat as well as its thickness. Furthermore, batsmen will not be considered out should the bat be up in the air while crossing the crease. A batsman is currently ruled out when the stumps are disturbed and the bat is not touching ground.
