Pay Saga Finally Laid To Rest

Australian Cricket Presumed Safe Yet Again

At long last – after months of childish bickering, messy mudslinging and shameless back-biting – there seems to be light at the end of the Australian pay-deal-war tunnel.  Melbourne saw all parties involved convening in a unusually positive manner on Monday – feverishly labouring towards sealing a deal that would appease all those affected.

After the cancellation of a crucial tour to South Africa, it would seem that Bangladesh, at least for the moment, will not be travelling down the same horrid road.  So far, it’s all systems go for the August trip.

Although the finer details are yet to be officially announced, it is believed that all players will henceforth enjoy a revenue share, according to the rules of the revised Memorandum of Understanding.  The Australian Cricketers’ Association will be having their cake and eating it – with Cricket Australia reportedly even having gone as far as conceding to the ACA’s request for back-pay for all players – male and female – affected by the scandalous affair, since June 30^th.

Back pay is bound to all but empty the coffers at CA – but would have been nothing compared to the irreparable damage that could have been suffered by the game had all commercial partners decided to walk away from the sticky mess.  It would seem that it was therefore a matter of losing the battle in order to win the war.

All Boxes Presumably Ticked

The magic potion that presumably caused the concoction to boil in the right direction seems to have been the impending doom that is arbitration.  Players were not at peace with the efficacy of arbitration – placing Bangladesh and valued partnerships with commercial sponsors in serious jeopardy.

The public spat between the Association and the players has resulted in a lot of strain and issues of trust – with each party of the opinion that fairness and sound reason was completely lacking on the side of the other.  There is no telling how this will affect major decisions in the future – or how long a time would be sufficient to heal all wounds and leave the entire nasty business behind for good.

The acrimonious dispute has, after all, been dragging on for a time and a half and then some – all of nine months.

On Monday, after the weekend’s marathon talks, even CA chief James Sutherland – mastermind behind the arbitration idea – seemed more at peace than before, and certainly confident that all would be well in the world of Australian Cricket once more.
