No Longer A Win By A Mile
Australia was denied a T20 International clean sweep and even break as England pulled a 40-run victory from the hat during the second to last Commonwealth Bank Ashes Series in Canberra on Sunday. Australia’s chase was still well underway after 5 overs but the Aussies were eventually bowled out 112 all out with 12 balls remaining to spare. 12 balls that very well could have changed the story altogether.
The truth is that England had it all together from the word GO. Captain Heather Knight called it spot-on when she elected that her side would bat first. The change from spinner Alex Hartley back to seam bowler Anya Shrubsole proved very functional in the eventual outcome too. Decision time really paid off.
Australia saw it fit to make a major change too by replacing leg spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington with off spinner Molly Strano. Strano could very well have had a wicket with the very first ball of the match had Ashleigh Gardner been quicker on the move.
Following Through In All The Wrong Ways
Australia seemed to have been plagued by bad luck since the first T20 on Friday night at the North Sydney Oval, when they dropped all of 6 catches. It would seem that this type of luck followed the Aussies into the second instalment when Ashleigh Gardner lost control of her second opportunity of the match. Fortunately for Gardner as well as the hosts it cost Australia only 5 runs as Tammy Beaumont was caught with her leg in the wrong way and was called out for a lbw by Jess Jonassen just moments after.
England’s Sarah Taylor was, true to her usual form, going at it in a true pioneering style, making it all the way to 30 before being run out by Delissa Kimmince. England’s captain was yet another casualty at the hands of Kimmince when she was allowed a measly three balls before being yorked.
Brunt Deserving Of Praise
England’s Katherine Brunt wasn’t only declared woman of the match but was obviously instrumental in the keeping of a drawn series alive for the English side. The Aussies currently lead the points-based series 8-6 but England can level things up should they win the final T20 match at the Manuka Oval on Tuesday.
If England were to continue to play ball as they have been up until now then this is a very real possibility indeed.
