Referees may wear gloves when handling the bar and refuse to take bowlers’ hats when Cricket returns from its novel coronavirus COVID-19 stoppage. And the tradition of dressing-room beers will have to remain on ice for a while yet.
The International Cricket Council has released instructions on resuming, developed by its medical advisory committee after consultation with members. They’ve already flagged the most likely law changes to the game at its highest level, with local umpires to be employed and players forbidden from using their spit to shine the ball. A number of other traditions are going to fall by the wayside when sides start implementing the medical advice from the ICC Group chaired by Australia’s Dr Peter Harcourt.
The huddle post-wicket will be prohibited because of the requirements around social distancing and it’s highly recommended that teams limit time spent in the changing rooms, both before and after matches. This means that the Baggy Greens and the English team will have to do without their customary drinks at the ground post-Series should Justin Langer’s squad tour the UK in September.
Players and officials have been told they’ll need to maintain social distancing on the grounds, so no more handing over of caps, sweaters, sunglasses or anything else to the standing linesman. Players have been told not to pass anything to their teammates anymore, so the habit of flinging helmets and other protective equipment to fellow fielders will need to be broken.
