Vaughan Says Australia Cheated in the Ashes, Too

March 28, 2018 by

Ex-captain for the English cricket team Michael Vaughan has stated that he is relatively certain that the Australians were ball-tampering during their winter 4 – 0 Ashes series victory as well. Cameron Bancroft, opening batsman for Australia, admitted to the offence during this week’s Test defeat against South Africa.

Steve Smith, the current captain for the team, knew about the plan ahead of time, and has been banned for one test and stood down from his skipper position. He did, of course, insist that it had never happened before, and that this was a first-time thing.

TV footage from the third day of the Australian/South African Test in Cape Town clearly showed Bancroft taking what he said was yellow tape from his trouser pocket and then rubbing the ball. After the play, Smith acknowledged that the leadership group of the team had a plan, which Bancroft carried out, to tamper with the ball in order to gain an advantage.

Vaughan, who was captain for England for an Ashes series victory on home soil back in 2005, stated that he didn’t think it likely that the plan had been devised over a Cape Town lunch. He said that when he looked at how much tape fielders wear, especially during the Ashes Series, it was obvious that this was recurring behaviour. He said that he thought it more than likely that it had occurred throughout the recent Ashes series too, but was quick to add that this was not why the Australians won -England, apparently, would have lost anyway!
