Catriona Matthews has said that she’s thrilled to have been given the chance to defend the Solheim Cup after she was chosen to captain Europe for the second subsequent time. The 50-year-old Scot had been at the head of her team when they claimed victory over the United States during their Gleneagles game against the United States in September. She will once again be captain at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio, for 2021.
Talking about her new captaincy, Matthew said that winning the Solheim Cup in Scotland was a dream come true for her, but that it would be even better to win against America. She added that it was always harder to win while on US soil, but that she is nevertheless honoured to be tasked with the mission, saying that she had been fortunate enough to be a part of the first European team to win on US soil at the Colorado Golf Club in 20144.
It remains the only time that Europe have won in the United States, as well as being the only time that they were able to retain the trophy, which has been claimed by the US a total of 10 times in 16 meetings. Matthew had been part of the winning team three times during her nine appearances as a player, which included a side that won at Killeen Castle Golf Resort in Ireland before defending their championship trophy from the event.
