South Korean Jeong-eun Lee6 has won $1 million as part of her first major win thanks to two shot lead during the US Women’s Open. 23 years old Lee, who finished the day with a one under par 70 to end on six under, was trailing the night before to Celine Boutier and Yu Liu by two shots at the start of the day, but she quickly made up the last ground while playing in Charleston.
Americans Lexi Thompson, Angel Yin, and Korean Ryu So-yeon were all tied for second place with four under. English Charley Hull, along with world number one Ko Jin-young ended the event on level par.
Lee has now added the six to the end of her name, as she was the sixth place called Jeong-eun Lee during the Korean LGPA. Talking about the added number, Lee told reporters that it was also her lucky number, and that she would love to put down Lee6 as her officially last name. Lee’s latest victory marks her as the 16th player from South Korea to win a major, which is higher than any other country in the world apart from the United States.
Lee’s victory also means that she will be able to provider support to her family going forward after her father had been left paralysed after an accident involving a lorry. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, Lee’s father had made the effort to attend all of her events.
