Australian Lukas Michel became the first foreign-born player to win he US Mid-Am in its full 39 year history, where he defeated Joseph Deraney of Tipelo in the 36 hole final that took place at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colorado. He also become the second native Australian to claim victory at a USGA event this summer, where he jointed Gabriela Ruffels, who won the US Women’s Amateur earlier in the year.
Another Australian, Sue Wooster, was the runner up for the US Senior Women’s Amateur, and 28-year-old Karl Vilips reached the quarter final of the US Amateur. Deraney was up 3 through 10 holes, and then up another 3 through 23 holes, at which point Michel was able to make a strong comeback. He levelled the score with a birdie on the 30th hole, and then birdied again on the 33rd and 34th holes, which were both par 5s, allowing him to move 2 up. He finished off the game by matching Deraney’s par in the penultimate hole.
Talking about his match, Deraney said that he had played fine, and that he wished the outcome was different. He added that he was able to get a few good breaks, but that Michel had played well and probably putted the best that he had seen over the course of the game. Michel said that it wasn’t his best day, but that his putting was enough to push him to through to the win.
