Jordan Spieth returns to this year’s Australian Open to defend his title sans his regular and trusted caddie, Michael Greller.   Greller and Spieth make for a team to contend with and together they have won 14 tournaments, of which 3 were major tournaments.  This year’s Australian Open will be different due to Greller’s wife having given birth to the couple’s first child in October.  Greller has reportedly opted not to make the trip to Sydney, but to remain home with his new family.

Spieth, in the meantime, has found an interim replacement in his long-time swing coach, Cameron McCormick, who is interestingly enough, a native Australian.  McMormick originally hails from Melbourne but has been residing in Texas in the USA for many years and has been Spieth’s teacher since his days as a young up and coming star.  McMormick won the 2015 PGA Teacher of the Year award and it’s not difficult to see why when you consider the fruits of his labour.

Caddy woes aside, Jordan Spieth certainly has a lot to be happy about.  Spieth will be earning a whopping $1 million, and that’s before he’s even stepped out onto the greens.  Staggering appearance fees are a common phenomenon with major sports events.   The idea behind the extravagant incentives is to get major stars to compete, thereby increasing the attraction of the event in general.

Golf Australia’s chief executive Stephen Pitt has confirmed that the event has sold out the sum-total of its corporate hospitality, and that this has mainly been thanks to Spieth competing in the event once more.  Spieth has on more than one occasion declared what a pleasure it was for him to play an event in Australia, as he loved the weather and the people.  The general atmosphere certainly seems to agree with the young star as he’s won 2 of the last 3 Australian Opens.

Money and fame aside, Spieth has a lot on his plate this year.  Australian-born Jason Day being one of the challenges that Spieth will have to face up to.  Day was born in Australia, but resides permanently in the USA and has said that his hopes are on a shoot-out with Spieth at the Open.

Day will most likely receive an appearance fee very similar to that of Jordan Spieth for his appearance at this year’s Australian Open.
