WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Groups Set

March 21, 2018 by

Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth have been playing on the same side as US teammates in many of their matches, but they will need to beat one another when the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play begins.

Reed got placed in Spieth’s group during the random draw which took place on Monday in downtown Austin, where the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play will be taking place. The draw set up a match for Friday at the Austin Country Club that both players hope will be a significant one. Spieth, who won a National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA, title during his college career here at the University of Texas, has played 12 matches alongside Reed as a teammate, but has never gone up against him.

The round-robin format in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play group stage means that both players will have two matches under their belts before they play each other. There are two other players in the group, South African Charl Schwartzel and Chinese Hao Tong Li, and both are hoping to spoil the expected showdown.

Dustin Johnson, who is the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play champion of 2017, will need to get past Kevin Kisner, his Presidents Cup teammate, as one of the opponents in his group. The champion of last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Rory Mcllroy, has a former US Amateur winner, Peter Uihlein, and USA’s Junior Amateur winner, Brian Harman, in his group, along with Jhonattan Vegas, another graduate of the University of Texas.
