Diamond League will no longer host 200m, 3000m steeplechase, triple jump, or discus for all of its upcoming events taking place in 2020. The IAAF, the athletics governing body, said that they had completed research on the popularity of the events and want to cut the length of the meetings down to 90 minutes. Currently, there are 12 disciplines staged for each of the 15 Diamond League meetings. The 200m and the 3000m steeplechase will take place at 10 meetings, while discus and triple jump will be staged at two.
None of the main four disciplines that were removed from the core list will be part of the Diamond League Final that’s set to take place in Zurich in September. Diamond League chairman and IAAF president Lord Coe told reporters that their objective is to created a faster pace global league that’s both more exciting for viewers and will showcase the sports involved. He added that they do understand the disappointment of those athletes that will no longer be able to participate in the Diamond League 2020 season.
British runner Adam Gemili appeared to show surprise at the move on his social media, while American world 200m champion Noah Lyles expressed similar feelings. The IAAF has stated that its decision followed from research on the popularity of their events, which was conducted in France, South Africa, China, and the USA, while more surveys were carried out in Great Britain, Switzerland, and Belgium.
