Gearing Up for the British Athletics Indoor Championships

Eight track and five field events are the making of the annual British Athletics Indoor Championships. The competition serves as the qualifying event for the World Indoor Championships as well as a preparation tool for the Commonwealth Games taking place in April in Australia.

British long jump champion and Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford has admitted that returning to professional competitive action has been everything but easy. Rutherford smashed records as he jumped a distance of 7.80 metres during his very first attempt at the British Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

The event has been Rutherford’s first since temporary retirement from professional sports in June of last year, after having had to undergo corrective surgery as a result of injuries to his groin and ankle. Rutherford said that doctors had advised that he would in all probability not be ready to compete in time for the Indoor Championships. He also said that he had been plagued by a lot of doubt as to whether he was fit to compete, but that he was extremely happy with the results and hoped that he would be selected to compete at the World Indoor Championships come March.

Laura Muir Makes It Looks Easy

Double European indoor champion Laura Muir had no trouble securing her spot in the upcoming World Championships. Muir made winning the gruelling women’s 3,000m event look like a piece of cake. Muir hung back, altering between second and third position for most of the race, suddenly accelerating with about 600m to go before picking up speed and finishing the race in a record 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

In the women’s 60m relay event, it was Asha Philip who beat silver medallist Daryll Neita in a season best of 7.12s. Philip will be competing in the World Indoor Championships next month. In the men’s division it will be CJ Ujah going for gold next month, after winning the men’s race in 6.56s.

Richard Kilty Forced To Withdraw Pre-Race

2014 world champion Richard Kilty sadly had to withdraw before the 60m relay race could commence. Kilty has been battling an Achilles injury for quite some time, which has now also robbed the 28 year old of the chance to compete at the World Championships. Kitty said that he was gravely disappointed at not being able to compete.

In the men’s high jump event it was Mike Edwards who reigned victorious supreme after having cleared a daunting 2.20m.
