Commonwealth Games A Destination In Own Right

Australia Common Wealth Games team boss Steve Moneghetti has made an urgent appeal to Australian athletes to abandon the idea that the Commonwealth Games is nothing more than a steppping stone to the Olympics, but instead, to seize the Gold Coast days for what they were really worth. The 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from April 4th through April 15th and will be hosted by Gold Coast city Queensland, Australia.

During a recent interview, Moneghetti said that for many athletes, the Commonwealth Games would be the only team that they would ever make and absolutely the pinnacle of their careers. Many sports, too, that were played at the Commonwealth Games were not even represented at the Olympic Games. As such, he implored, athletes should view the Commonwealth Games as something to aspire to in and of itself as a major sporting event.

Home Advantage

Moneghetti went on say that athletes from Australia would do well to keep in mind that it was a home Games and as such, everything was perfectly primed in order for Australian athletes to perform at maximum capacity.

Approximately 470 Australian athletes will be competing at this year’s Commonwealth Games and in a total of 23 different sports codes. Australia had been in top form at more than half of the past 20 instalments of the Games. When England stuck it to the Aussies four years ago in Glasgow, it obviously did not sit well with any self-respecting Australian.

Moneghetti said that it wasn’t enough for Australian athletes to rely on pure numbers but that some sports, like hockey, basketball and netball, required going for gold and nothing less.  Australia’s men’s hockey team, for instance, has won every hockey gold medal on offer since the introduction of hockey at the Commonwealth Games. Their female counterparts aren’t too far behind with a four out of five achievement.

Australia’s netball team has won the past three world titles and should propose to do play nothing less than world-class netball at the Games.

Moneghetti specifically  made mention of the Australian swimming team, saying that it was the swimmers who would set the pace for the rest of the Games, being that the swimming events took place during the first week of the Games, when the momentum was at a rapid pace.

Winning is, after all, quite infectious.
