Dina Asher-Smith Runs Under 11 Seconds in Rome

June 10, 2019 by

Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith managed to make it to the finish line in under 11 seconds for her first 100m run of the season so far while competing at the Rome Diamond League. The 23 year old was pushed into second place by Jamaican Olympic champion Elaine Thompson.

Andrew Pozzi took second place for the 110m hurdles, coming in behind Sergey Shubenkov. Asher-Smith’s latest run was only bested by Thompson, who finished at 10.87 seconds at the Olympic Stadium, while American Aleia Hobb took third place with 11.12 seconds.

Commonwealth and European champion Asher-Smith now has two 200m Diamond League wins under her belt this season, winning at both Doha and Stockholm, with the latter being a race where she beat Olympic gold winner Thompson along with world champion Dafne Schippers.

Fellow compatriot 26-year-old Laura Muir was not able to claim her second Diamond League win for the season after coming second during the 1500m. Muir ran a best of three minutes and 56.73 seconds, a best for her so far this season, but was not able to match her win during her time in Stockholm earlier in the year. Fellow Scottish runner Eilish McColgan ended the event in sixth place with a time of 4:02.29, and now has Olympic qualifying times of over 1500m and 5000m.

27-year-old Pozzi, who has been raining in Italy, ran her season’s best of 13.29 seconds, beating South African Antonio Alkana.
