Financial Crisis Hits Australian Sport

March 30, 2020 by

The financial ramifications of the coronavirus COVID-19 are starting to be felt in the major Football codes and Australian sports is bracing itself for the full impact of the ongoing pandemic.

Since the recent A-League cancellation, all professional sport in the country is now officially on hold, with each top-level contest either cancelled or suspended.

The Australian Football League was the first to go, halting its Men’s competition and cancelling the AFL Women’s League outright. The National Rugby League soon followed, and after that, it was Football Federation Australia’s turn.

These cancellations have called these organisations’ financial security into question, with Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman Peter V’landys calling the NRL’s situation catastrophic and AFL Chief Executive Officer Gillon McLachlan saying that this is the biggest financial crisis in sports history.

AFL players have stepped up to the plate, offering to take a 50% pay cut while the clubs are out of action since the competition is on hold until at least May 31. But rumour has it that the AFL wants even more of a break and is pushing for a cut of as much as 75% in the upcoming months.

The AFL and the 18 clubs that make it up have had to fire a huge amount of staff, roughly 80%, and the NRL has closed its offices completely until at least May 1, forcing hundreds of workers across departments to take their annual leave.

Executives, including CEO McLachlan, will see their salaries trimmed by 20% and the remaining staff will have their hours reduced during the suspension. Casual workers have been fired outright.
