History In The Making: Winter X Games

Making History At The Winter X Games

When mentioning Australia and boardercross athlete in one sentence, one name comes to mind before any other: Jarryd Hughes.  The young Aussie is the youngest and the first Australian ever to win gold at the Winter X Games.

The Story So Far

Jarryd’s story in the public limelight starts out at the 2012 FIS Snowboard World Cup as a very youthful 16 year old.  At the time he is the holder of a 10th place at the Stoneham World Cup that takes place annually in Quebec, Canada.

Since then it’s been full speed on a sleek downhill slope for Jarryd.  He goes on to win both a gold and a silver medal at the FIS Snowboard World Cup, win the Lake Louise World Cup during the following year (2013) and of course, reign victorious at the ultimate winter adrenaline event: The Winter X Games.

The incredible feat makes Jarryd the youngest ever World Number 1.

Life Away From The Snow

When not giving it his all on the slippery slopes Jarryd enjoys spending time riding freestyle.  He is a born and bred Aussie and resides permanently in Sydney, Australia.

Battle Of Another Sort

It hasn’t been an easy year for Jarryd following his incredible victory at last year’s Winter X Games.  In May Jarryd witnessed his parents’ family business, the Monster Skate Park, being consumed by fire and subsequently spent a lot of time trying to help his folks re-erect a new skate park and warrior cross-fit course at Artarmon.

Despite life’s challenges away from competitive sport, Jarryd stayed fit and on the go by going to the gym and spending time doing cross-fit workouts at the newly erected skate park.

Besides this, Jarryd has also been paying attention to correcting his gym programme.  At approximately 16kg lighter, it will be a leaner and meaner Jarryd going into the new winter season.  Jarryd believes that leaning it down will assist greatly when taking on the best in the snowboarding world as every bit of extra weight is an additional burden to be carrying around when navigating the tricky slopes.

Meanwhile In Aspen

2017 was the first year that saw the exciting Snow BikeCross event introduced, and this year the Winter X Games will be building on that excitement by introducing the Snow Bike Best Trick challenge.

Freestyle motocross in the snow.  Now is there anything better than that?
