The city of Paris, France, is set to host the 10th Gay Games this year. The Games are a series of sport contests, fashioned after the Olympic Games, and are aimed at promoting LGBT awareness.
Paris welcomed more than 10000 fans from 91 countries for the 10th Gay Games, which is being held by the city six years before the planned 2024 Olympic Games. The hope for this year’s Gay Games is the promotion of awareness of LGBT rights and to fight homophobia that is still very much present in international sports.
Manuel Picaud, co-president of the event, told reporters that the Gay Games is one of the most inclusive events in the world, and that anyone is allowed to participate, as long as they are at least 18 years of age. He added that the principles of the event are straightforward, and include inclusiveness, participation, and finding ways to better oneself without necessarily being at the top of the charts.
The event is set to be held at multiple locations around the city during the first few weeks of August, and has been sanctioned and fully supported by the French government. The opening ceremony of the Gay Games was attended by Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor Paris; Sports Minister Laura Fiessel, and Jean-Paul Gaultier, a prominent fashion designer based in Paris.
There have also been some surprise participants, such as athletes attending from Egypt, a predominantly Muslim country where homosexuality is against the law.
