WNBL coach Paul Goriss and referee Simon Cosier have both been banned after the pair were caught exchanging confidential footage of a rival club in training. Goriss has been banned for a month, and Cosier for the remainder of the WNBL season.
The pair were banned under Basketball Australia’s protocols for integrity and ethical behaviour.
According to a claim made by Basketball Australia, Cosier sent video clips of a Sydney Uni Flames training session to Goriss. The material had been classed as confidential and had been intended for referee education purposes only.
Following the internal investigation by Basketball Australia, the matter was then referred to an independent panel. Said panel determined that no advantage was had by Goriss or his team because of the leaked footage.
Basketball Australia defended its decision to impose suspensions nonetheless by saying Goriss and Cosier had misused sensitive inside information and had been guilty of the sort of conduct that could tarnish the integrity of basketball from a public confidence point of view. The good character of the sport had been risked, ruled the association.
According to Basketball Australia chairman John Carey, the behaviour displayed by the pair will not be tolerated in the sport.
Goriss helped coach the Opals to a bronze at the Asia Cup and has been assisting WNBL head coach Sandy Brondello for a number of years. He will not be permitted to return to coaching his side or the national program until January 20, 2022.
