Former multiple heavy-weight title holder Vitali Klitschko has warned Anthony Joshua against avoiding a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. According to Klitschko, sidestepping such a match would only show extreme weakness on Joshua’s part right now.
Joshua activated a rematch with Usyk after losing his WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight championship titles.
Joshua has been vehemently denying rumours of him being willing to accept £15 million in return for getting out of the contracted rematch. Such a side-step would mean a fight for Usyk and Tyson Fury.
During an interview earlier this week, Klitschko called on Joshua to honour his responsibility as a fighter – and not only to himself, but also to an audience demanding that such a fight must happen. He furthermore warned that if Joshua were to avoid the fight with Usyk, future interest in him as a fighter would not be nearly as big as what it currently is.
Klitschko and brother Wladimir dominated the previous generation of heavyweights before Joshua and Fury. Wladimir was ultimately beaten by both Joshua and Fury
Usyk’s presence on the heavyweight boxing scene has however returned some of the glory to Ukraine in recent times.
Should Joshua fight and beat Usyk, such a win would mean much interest in a fight between Joshua and Fury, explained Klitschko. And this would undoubtedly be regarded as the fight of the decade, he added.
When asked to predict the winner of a fight between Joshua and Fury, the Ukrainian responded by saying that the heavyweight nature of the brawl made it impossible to say.
It’s exactly this unpredictable nature that makes boxing so interesting a sport to follow, he explained.
