AOC Funding Pitch to Government Post-Olympics

August 16, 2021 by

The Australian Olympic Committee is the driving force behind the plea for more financing from the government. It is hoping for an additional AU$130 million to be invested in the sports industry over the next four years. Not only will this ready our athletes for the upcoming Brisbane Olympics in 2032, but it will also create a better environment for the next generation of professional athletes.

This news comes as the Australian Commonwealth Games Federation has been engaged in talks with the government of New South Wales about hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2026. This event could be just the kind of experience and highest-level competition our athletes require for the Brisbane Olympics.

AOC Chief Executive Officer Matter Carroll said that now is the perfect time to create a different relationship model for the government and sporting industry. He detailed a report 54-pages long which he authored with the help of the Commonwealth Games Federation. It offers up suggestions of how the government can boost the Australian sports industry all the way until 2042.

He said that sport has much to offer, including significant assistance in the area of mental health and in the continuing fight against obesity. The AOC and Commonwealth Games submission was made on behalf of a total of 42 different sports and has enjoyed a warm reception from the Federal Government.

Carroll is currently working out the final costs and hopes to submit these by the end of September 2021.
