Aus Olympians Fearing “Domino” Infections

August 2, 2021 by

Australian athletes competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games say they now fear a “domino” effect after two pole vaulters recently returned positive tests – including US world champion Sam Kendricks.

The US champion’s father, Scott Kendricks, recently broke the news of his son’s positive test on social media. The other pole vaulter to have tested positive is Argentina’s Germán Chiaraviglio.

Australia’s entire 63-strong track and field athletics team were initially confined to their hotel rooms. They have in the meantime been officially cleared. Teams were recently cautioned that any athlete and/or team testing positive would be required to spend two weeks in quarantine outside of the Olympic village before returning home via a chartered flight.

The news about US athlete Sam Kendricks has in the meantime been confirmed by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. According to a press release by the committee, Kendricks is currently spending a period in isolation in a local Japanese hotel while enjoying support from staff members of USA Track and Field.

European pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis recently described the situation surrounding the infections as extremely scary, saying that only an hour before he had been in the process of preparing for competing against Kendricks. He added that for him personally, the way forward will be not to do anything expected to put him at an unnecessary risk of testing positive too.

Olympic organisers have now confirmed that a total of 198 athletes cited for the Games in Japan have tested positive since July 1st.
