Organisers of the 2020 Tokyo Games have been testing out a variety of cooling measures to help prevent the athletes from overheating during the event next year. Among some of the measures tested included air-conditioned tents and misting sprays with the hope of combating the extreme temperatures that are expected to hit the city during their hotter summer months.
A heat wave last year in Tokyo took the lives of over a dozen people, and organisers have been testing ways to keep players cool at the international volleyball event in case the temperatures once again increase to dangerous levels for next year’s Games.
With a year left to go, 150 volunteers lined up to trial the different cooling systems that organisers had put in place. The supporters were also given towels and fans to try and keep them cooled off. Hidemasa Nakamura, the delivery officer for the 2020 Games, told reporters that they cannot control the climate, and that they must deal with the temperature based on facts and the reality, and that it could be difficult to create shows or mist that will cover an adequate area.
Misting stations the size of fire engines were pumping out large sprays of cold water, while air-conditioned cooling tents and potted flower fences are being trialled, and organisers intend to employ wet bulb globe temperature measuring devices throughout the venue. Ken Wakabayashi stated that they are preparing cooing facilities and goods for the spectators of the event.
